What is a Cherry Picker?

Firstly, a cherry picker is a hydraulic crane with a bucket platform. The bucket platform is connected and controlled via a hydraulic arm. A cherry picker can also be known as a boom lift, man lift or basket crane. Secondly, while typically cherry pickers are used in building, construction and remodelling, they can be used in many other applications. For instance, work in warehouses, installation, maintenance and repair, lighting, heating units, painting, and anything that requires all access at elevated heights.
In fact, there are a variety of cherry pickers available for hire, including truck mounted cherry pickers, telescopic booms, and trailer-mounted cherry pickers.

Cherry pickers are often mounted on the back of a large truck, like ours is! However, there are also varieties of cherry pickers that are mounted on flat beds and panelled vans.

How Does a Cherry Picker Work?

In general, Cherry Pickers are equipped for one or two people. In fact, operators stand in and work from the cherry picker bucket or platform. Therefore, some cherry pickers are fitted with dual controls. For example, one set in the bucket and one set attached to the truck. In addition, this allows operators to change the position of the bucket from the top of the cherry picker or on the ground. Furthermore, some can include a telescoping capability to adjust the reach of the device. However, this usually comes with automatic safety controls to prevent the cherry picker from tipping over. In contrast, other models use articulating boom sections. Finally, cherry pickers run either on petrol, diesel or electric engines.

Why is a Cherry Picker Called a Cherry Picker?

To begin with, the cherry picker evolved from frustration and need. In 1944 Jay Eitel was picking cherries during his school holidays. Later, he was frustrated with having to climb the ladder every time he wanted to move to a new spot.
Consequently, Jay decided to start work on a solution, and came up with the first iteration of the cherry picker. From this, he created the foundation of what would become a multi-billion dollar industry.

Afterwards, 20 years later, John L. Grove took the design and invented the self-propelled boom lift. Initially the cherry picker had to be operated by two people, one in the bucket and another one on the ground to move the bucket. However, various industries saw the cherry picker offering savings to their businesses. After this the cherry picker has been continuously improved.

Next in 1958, the cherry picker started being used as a humanitarian vehicle. As such, firemen now use cherry pickers to reach great heights with a firehose rig attached to the bucket. Consequently, this increases their reach and gives them greater efficiency when facing fires.

Today, a cherry picker can be operated by a single person. Because of this, the cherry picker uses a hydraulic system and can now reach incredible heights. As a result, it is one of the most effective industrial vehicles around.

Why Hire A Cherry Picker With An Operator In Brisbane?

Without the correct tools, working at heights is difficult and dangerous. You may rent a small cherry picker for the day to do the job, but are you certain you can operate the machine securely and effectively while finishing the job at the same time?

At Quick Lift QLD, we provide a “wet hire” service where the equipment is hired with the addition of a highly skilled operator. This is a terrific approach to hiring a cherry picker since the operator is very knowledgeable about the equipment and can do tasks quickly and effectively. It also saves you the time and cost of attaining a Chery Picker operating licence yourself.

Hiring a truck-mounted cherry picker with an experienced operator you can easily work with will save you time, energy, and, ultimately money. At Quick Lift QLD our “wet hire” service allows you to gain efficient and safe access to heights while taking all the responsibility off your shoulders.

What are the Benefits Of Cherry Picker Hire Vs. Buying?
